It isn’t a secret that we’re all about Hellz Bellz around here at Funk Etiquette. We generally try to be equal opportunity but when it comes to ladies’ street wear, we picture ourselves as the ideal Hellz ‘belle’ or muse of sorts: we relish in our NYC bred grit and boast that we are tough as nails … freshly done acrylics that is – we also revel in our hair-done, high-heel swooning femininity. We have a feeling the designer would agree with the Funk Etiquette mantra. We don’t let any one thing define our style but instinct and individuality.
Hellz™ presents the second installment of its Spring ’09 collection, Renegades of Funk, a tribute collection to the Electro-Sound of the 80’s in NYC. Paying homage to the string of electro 12″ records by Soul Sonic Force & Afrika Bambaataa including the label’s all time favorite, “Renegades of Funk,” which truly stood on its own without trying to sound (or not sound) like Planet Rock or Looking For The Perfect Beat. It was a song that was a beat of its own, a beat that the Hellz female can nod to! Adding color, to their often dark color palette, the new look came into fruition during a long day at work, when Renegades of Funk was on the tunes, inspiring a vibrant, cultural, funk style often synonymous to Bambaataa.
All this blasphemously good new stuff for the spring-summer season and I’m still piling up my pennies for the acid wash jacket I recently found on Karmaloop from the first delivery. Definitely gotta have that one and there’s this new Hellz x Coco tee that I obviously also need. Clearly, we can’t keep up!
“Now renegades are people with their own philosophy, they change the course of history…” – Afrika Bambaataa, Renegades of Funk
I think we may have found our theme song.
It tickls me when WWD mentions streetwear news. Love it! If you pay attention, it’s pretty clear what we feel about the brands Hellz Bellz and Stussy around here so we’re excited to see this teaser. The entanglement of these two heavyweights could only produce solid funk quality and though we’d truthfully pass on this hoodie, we can’t wait to see the rest of the offerings. The line will include the jacket pictured above, cropped pants, a tunic hoodie, a top, two graphic tees, and a bag. More on that as we here it.
The New Hellz Bellz Fall 2008 Collection is shipping out to a store a near you now! The pieces, inspired by Punk Rock Movie, a film documentary about the punk rock movement in 1977 contains the usual dope graphic tees and sweatshirts we expect and love from the streetwear brand. This time around there are even more cut and sew pieces including jackets, blouses and even bottoms – jeans, leggings, and skirts. This is such a complete lifestyle collection. Images of the first part of the lookbook are are available here.
so I’m skimming the selection at Karmaloop online … checking out the new stock ready to outfit my web wish list with a bunch of goodies that I will selectively treat myself to in due time. I start with my favorite brands and head straight to a page chock full of the newest hellz bellz stuff. It’s already obvious my bank account is in for a tremendous hit. what I do notice instantly is the belle of the brawl letterman jacket that came out last season that I could never put my hands on. I coveted the black one and held on for dear life but it wasn’t meant to be. every site and store I hit up around the time it released was sadly sold out. or even worse, my size was missing. I hate that; with a passion. sure, the gray and white colorway lagged around a bit longer but I wasn’t really feeling it. up to the other day I was still lamenting about this jacket and resolved that if I could find any color anywhere at this point, I’d be content. news was that a few lucky atendees picked up that last at that crazy sample sale in san francisco I had hoped to go. there it is again. brand new … and a reasonable $150 which is cheaper than some places had this style during its previous run. It’s safely in stock for the taking … abundantly really … every size … not in black of course … that would be sheer miracle … but in an army green/white color way that fits my style a bit better than the gray. If you’re like me and were sorely sad to see this style go. here’s another chance to cop it at Karmaloop. It might just be your last.
Hellz Bellz is most definitely Funk Etiquette’s favorite streetwear brand for the ladies. That is, if you haven’t already noticed from past posts. Creator Miss Lawn certainly rips it every time and the Summer 08 collection is no exception. There are even some denim pieces featured – acid washed and high waisted … it’s edgy with a nod to 80’s baby flair that keeps in line with current trends and we can’t get enough.

Hellz Bellz Sample Sale! Three Cali cities! So unfair. I’m struck with very authentic grief right now. I was there just the other day. It’s too early to go back! I’ve started to love the Bay. I can’t lie. These trips here and there in San Francisco for the last few years have grown on me. I love the laid-back atmosphere and the weather. It’s never too hot or too cold. People are uber friendly which is very bewildering for a New York native who’s used to a lot of rash personalities and stoic MTA faces; people that just intend on keeping it moving. I literally walk slower in San Francisco and it’s startling but good rest for my legs I’m sure. And, another thing … San Francisco is pretty much anything goes when it comes to fashion which is actually a very NY quality. Of course, you’ve got the tacky along with the trendy. Most people are pushing envelopes while not trying and it’s quite inspiring when one feels comfortable doing their own thing. I can’t say that’s always the case in my city. The population is super diverse ;a lot of dudes rock more exclusive sneaks than I’ve ever seen in Brooklyn. Streetwear is huge and there are a lot of off-the-cuff names there that scream originality. You really do see stylephiles rocking things first but not getting acknowledged because their neighborhoods are relatively uknown. Clearly Hellz Bellz knows it.
Here are a couple samples from the Hellz Bellz Spring 2008 collection which consists of a couple unique design collaborations with Collabros, Grotesk, Missbehave Magazine and one of my favorite artists, Insa. Everything about this brand is amazing. The collection has already started arriving at some retailers. It is also available online at Boundless.
Check, Check, Check it out!
